Our experience with them was very pleasant. They are very particular about who their cats and dogs go to for maximum happiness and well-being of both the human and animal being. An application is required and details of the planned living situation mandatory, based on which they make a decision. There is also a trial period available for the adopting parents to assess the compatibility and well-being of the animal in their home. They let us spend many hours at the shelter getting to know all of the cats there, especially the one we were considering to adopt. That said, it took very little time for us adopt our first and she is one happy, spoiled brat :D We plan on going back for one more and a couple of the older ones.
We picked up another and slowly introduced him to the first over a period of a week. It was time-consuming and tedious but well worth the effort.
We went to an open house looking for a kitten. Unlike many other shelters the animals here are able to interact with both visitors and each other! Who would want to adopt a pet they couldn't get to know a head of time?
I asked if I could look at a kitten. They said they're all in foster homes. I'm expected to go separately to each house to pick one out. This is a crazy system and i'm pretty sure most people won't do.
In response to Andy's comment, holding a litter of kittens in a shelter of abandoned and abused cats fighting over territory and dealing with PTSD would be an outrageously irresponsible action on the shelter's part. All people are selfish and think only of themselves, and in this case, it is regarding a living animal being vs. personal convenience. CDC has done well in this regard.
